A corner of local life within the London megalopolis, Portman Village is a cluster of boutique shops, cosy cafes, foodie havens and a refreshing change from the retail behemoths of Oxford Street. This little area stretches between Upper Berkeley Street and Seymour Street and Seymour Place and Gloucester Place in Marylebone. You’ll find unique furniture makers, designer clothes, beauty salons and restaurants and bars to continue pampering yourselves in, all while supporting the local community, businesses and producers.
Among our favourite of the numerous refuelling stops in the village is The Lockhart, a refined spin on comfort food from America’s deep South is served up in this bar and restaurant, run by two long-time Texan expats who use strictly British ingredients to conjure up the tastes and smells of their homeland. With stick-to-your-ribs barbecued meat, mac and cheese as standard and hearty sauces to drown your sorrows and seafood in, the all-star team behind this venture won’t be leaving anyone hungry. Decked out in vintage country style, The Lockhart will lock you in after just one visit and keep you after hours in the ‘Showdown’ bar. Run in collaboration with cocktail maestro Matt Whiley - otherwise known as the award-winning mixologist the Talented Mr Fox and the man behind other wildly successful bars in London - the drinks down here are mainly rye and bourbon based and are universally moreish.
Buy My Wardrobe is the much-loved “preloved fashion” retailer that offers high-end designer pieces from A-listers and the sartorially clued-in at knock-down prices. Having hosted fashion recycling and upcycling events across London since 2008, their boutique in Portman Village is the first of its kind and will be offering a VIP bespoke service as well as all the retro clothes and vintage decor you see for sale too. With an honourable mission to transform the second-hand market system and reject the cheaply made, throwaway-fashion mindset, Buy My Wardrobe emphasises one-of-a-kind pieces, high quality products and a long-term, ethical viewpoint.
If it’s pure pampering and beautifying you’re seeking, the Beauty Rose hair and beauty professionals will tick all your aesthetic boxes.
